Japanese Tanzaku - miniature paintings

Tanzaku - slender vertical art cards - originated in the Heian period (794 - 1185) as canvases for poetry. By the Edo period (1603 - 1868), they evolved into miniature paintings celebrating seasonal beauty.
Collection of elegant vintage Tanzaku features floral motifs expressed in traditional Japanese colored ink painting (sumi-e, nihonga)
