The reverse inscription dates the work to spring 1993, gives the title “Festival” with the subject “Inaba Kirin Jishi”, and names Nishigaki Fukou with Sogakai noted in parentheses. The front bears the artist’s Fukou signature and red artist seal.
Nishigaki Fukou, 1917-2005, was a Japanese nihonga painter from Iwami, Tottori. He studied under Kobayakawa Shusei and was connected with the Sozo Bijutsu, Shinseisaku, and Sogakai line of modern Japanese painting. His work often drew on the landscapes, folklore, and regional culture of Tottori and Inaba.
Fukou served as a judge for city and prefectural exhibitions in Tottori, received the Tottori Prefecture Cultural Merit Award for Japanese painting in 2004, and his works are recorded in the collection and exhibition materials of the Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art.
